What is vishing?

Vishing is voice phishing: a phone call that tries to trick you into handing over money, a code, or account access. It often follows a text. The caller poses as a bank, a tech-support desk, the IRS, or your boss.

Common setups

• A text says there is a problem with your account, then a call pushes you to act now.
• Someone claims to be your bank or IT desk and asks you to read a one-time code.
• A caller pretends to be an executive and pressures you to send a wire or buy gift cards.

How to stay safe

• Hang up. Call back using a number you already know, such as the number on the back of your card or your company directory.
• Do not read a one-time code, password, or account number to a caller.
• Do not move money because a call says it is urgent. Check with the person in a way you already trust.

SmishAlert today helps with scam texts: filtering on iPhone, and reporting plus Practice Inbox on iPhone and Android. We are actively building a solution for scam calls. It is due to release in 2026. There is no call-screening setup in the current apps.
